Making The Four Agreements Real In Your Life

The Four Agreements

For eight years Linda, my wife of 40 years, and I studied directly with don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. The Four Agreements book was a huge success, selling now over 4 million copies worldwide. But what are the Four Agreements and how do they so impact the lives of millions?

First, let’s look at the Agreements themselves:

1.    Be Impeccable with Your Word
2.    Don’t Take Anything Personally
3.    Don’t Make Assumptions
4.    Always Do Your Best

The simplicity of the Four Agreements themselves is certainly attractive. Also, they seem to make perfect sense. Why wouldn’t anyone want to strive to live the Four Agreements? But time and again we have seen the difficulty most people have in actually abiding by these Agreements. Why is it so difficult for most to live by these simple tenets? The problem appears to be in the way we think. It is unconscious thinking to be exact.

Going against these Agreements happen unconsciously. We don’t choose to take things personally or make assumptions. We just do it when a trigger thought rises up in the mind. Possibly mom says that thing she always says that causes us to take what she said personally. We do not decide to be hurt by the comment. We simply think negative thoughts and feel hurt. What to do?

Character Type – The DNA of Thinking

Twenty years ago Linda and I stumbled across a body of knowledge that changed our lives and our relationships forever. It’s called Character Types (CTypes) of the mind. They describe how each of us thinks. CTypes are created in each individual by the sun signs of the Western Zodiac. Each sun sign thinks differently. For instance, Virgo thoughts are constructed differently than Libra thoughts. And we know that the way we think drives a lot of our behavior.

Of course, if we can understand a person’s thinking, we can better understand and relate with that person. Importantly, if we can understand how we think, we can see ourselves more clearly. This includes problem thinking such as taking things personally. The key to making the Four Agreements real for us is understanding and applying CTypes to the problem areas of our lives.

If you want to make the Four Agreements a part of you, consider applying CTypes to your practice of them. Character Types work like nothing else to resolve issues in relationships at home, at work, and in the world. And, for the first time, there is now much more information available for people who wish to apply and practice CTypes with loved ones and in the workplace.
